Ask any seasoned blogger what they love most about the craft and I’ll guarantee community will be at the top of the list. Blogging allows you to engage and interact with people as never before.

As a blogger your primary connection point to your readers is your blog. But there are also secondary connection points that can extend your reach far beyond just your URL.

These secondary touch points are extremely important. When used properly, they have a power all their own.

What are these secondary connection points? Your social media buttons.

When you have a social media presence you can use simple buttons to build an entire community around your blog.

The fastest way to build community, using social media, is to focus on two platforms. You may have more social media accounts than that, but all roads should point back to your two main platforms.

When it comes to making your choice, you want to go where your readers are.

My two top platforms are Facebook and Pinterest. To that end, I have built a thriving community on both. On Facebook I post regularly to my blog page and I started a group based on the focus of my blog, called Real. Savvy. Blogger.

On Pinterest I have built a library, based again on my desire to teach my readers how to achieve blogging success. I direct all visitors to my site to these two platforms, for further help and development, and I have seen a lot of success in doing so.

You don’t want to spread yourself too thin on social media. If your community knows where to find you, because that is where you are investing your time and energy, they will meet you there.

When it comes to your actual buttons, you may choose to place them in the header, the sidebar, or the footer. Depending on your blog theme you may be able to choose where they go.

As you build a community you can use your two main platforms for your readers get to know you better, ask questions, and engage with you even on days you don’t write a blog post. It’s awesome.

Here are some important button basics you need to know

1. If your blog theme has buttons built in, use them, no matter where they are placed.

2. If you get to choose your buttons, use the official logo of each platform. They may be same color or representative of the colors of each platform.

3. Think of your social media presence as an extension of your blog. Write posts then engage with your readers via social media. Your blog is always your first connecting point, but social media is a great way to support your blog.

Finally, building a community around your blog will not only grow your blog, you will also find it is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a blogger.

You really can build an entire community around your blog, one button at a time.

  1. This one has my head spinning in circles! I have a Facebook business page, but it’s not intuitive…. I forget to post, then I wonder WHAT to post.
Instagram and Pinterest are my personal stuff…..
If i have to pick 2, Instagram would definielty be one of them. As a visual artist, I’m… visual…. ha!… so reaching for my camera to capture story or an idea is second nature. Not sure what my 2nd choice would be. I am on Facebook regularly, so maybe I just need help with that.

LOVE this series, and glad I found ya!
